Texting while walking is a horrible reflection of the bigger picture. It’s another metaphor for life. 

To say life is like a double carriageway heading in opposing directions, is like asking, ‘but how can I be two things at once?’ 

The answer is simple: you cannot — but you will spend a great part of your life trying. You are like a character in a classical drama. You are the story and the storyteller. You are the talker and the listener, all at once.

When we were children we tried to pat our heads and rub our tummies at the same time. You cannot. But thankfully the game always ended in laughter. If you Google why it doesn’t work, the answer is simple: ‘You are asking your brain to direct both hands to do separate actions in two different directions.’ 

We are not programmed to go forwards and backwards at the same time. We have to choose a direction. Let this be the day.
