Okay I’m going to take a chance here and say that everyone has heard that ‘Love is a Drug’.
The biggest joke is that if you feed the line into Google you get told, ‘yes, love can activate the same part of the brain that leads to addiction to opiate drugs.’ This is the Michael Jackson world view in which everything equals love equals an opportunity to float away on a boat into the sunset before a nice long sleep. Forever.
The most bizarre finding is that, actually, love may be considered a kind of protein shot. The experts who test bodies (yes them) believe that love is a biological process that releases hormones and neurotransmitters, mediated by proteins and peptides, such as oxytocin.
So that’s the yuck factor going on inside you while you stand there thinking , ‘here comes my heart.’
It’s an old story that makes your teddy as warm and fuzzy as your puppy and your girlfriend. It’s the basis of a lot of what I do as an artist, and I’m always wondering whether good art has the same effect on the body as good love.
Of course, love can follow us into the wilderness — but can art?
